“If only life were a Judd Apatow movie where geeks ruled the world. But it’s not, so let’s just suck it up.” - Weeds
I must say, while I find it a bit ironic but totally thrilled how geeks are slowly taking over the entertainment world. When did it become cool to be a loser? Well sometime post 1999. I guess nerds have kinda had their following sure, but does anyone notice how us ‘losers’ are definitely having the last laugh. Take my baby Comic-Con for instance, this had perhaps the biggest turn out yet - not to mention take a look at the mass amounts of comic-to-screen adaptations over the last 5 years alone. But I friends have been their since the beginning and I’m proud to be a geek. Say it with me brother, are you proud to be a geek? I sure am. I also am happy my fellow losers are getting their share of the spotlight too. Take the amazing “Judd Apatow crew” for instance. Freaks & Geeks made it’s debut in 1999 and while it didn’t score in the ratings it did create a cult fanbase (Yups, I was there!) and still remains one of my top 10 favorite shows. Now look at them, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad made so much money it’s not even funny. And heck, Google and Youtube were all created by guys seemingly sitting at home in their mama’s basements and now look at them too.
The point of this post was really just for me to relish in the things I love dearly once more. I really feel like I’m a child of the 70s (or maybe pre-seventies and that would be my highschool years I think). I saw Pineapple Express tonight and I walked out with a buzz of love and it made me wanna rewatch all my favorite 70s/stoner/nerd comedies again. I’m James Franco smitten once more, now that Seth Rogen’s “Funny Franco” has returned back to us. I promised you this would happen, didn’t I Riikka? Damn I even would screw Seth Rogen because he is the effin man too. And for the record, James’ Saul will definitely be one of my favorite stoner ever coming in close in behind Dazed and Confused highschool girl lovin (emphasis on the high) Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey) and D&C’s Slater (Rory Cochrane). But it is tough, as my boys from Detroit Rock City are still way up there; James DeBello, Edward Furlong, Giuseppe Andrews and Sam Hunington how I love you. More freaks rein this month too, as we’ll have The Rocker. Rainn Wilson = genious. I guess I just wish we had more funny and quirky ladies I could relate too. Juno MacGuff has been the only one who comes to mind as of late. But oh well, beggars can’t be choosers!
Bottomline Geeks and Stoners are love.
PS: For the record - I’ve never gotten high a day in my life. And I really do not like the “real life” pot-heads I know, but some are obviously fun to be around because of their incoherentness. But I’d gladly smoke up with some of these faux dudes I just mentioned. However, in a normal teenage dork-boy ‘fase’ I have pervertedly thought about some sexy comic book heroines a little too much ;) *Points*
